I love this photograph because of the simplicity of the color palette and the mood it evokes. No fancy techniques involved. I actually took this photo back in 2012 with an entry level DSLR on landscape mode! My husband Taylor and I were on our honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. It was late August and the region was experiencing drought conditions and temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
This particular evening we ventured over to the seaside town of Praiano for dinner. Praiano enjoys spectacular sunset views because of it’s western orientation (most of the Amalfi Coast towns face South). We headed up to one of the top hotels in the region, Casa Angelina for a romantic honeymoon dinner. We arrived just before sunset and enjoyed a few pre-dinner cocktails on a deck overlooking the ocean. Because it was so hot, there was a thick haze sitting over the mountains, and there were even a few forest fires that has broken out.
As the sun descended, the mountains became shadowed and the surrounding haze lit up a bright coral/pink color.
This particular frame captured a firefighting helicopter heading towards the town of Positano (off the right side of the frame) to drop a load of ocean water on one of the fires. The Li Galli islands can be seen off to the left side of the frame, and the Isle of Capri with it’s Faraglioni Rocks are far off in the center of the frame.
After seeing this sunset, we were led to an equally spectacular table on a private promontory that was cantilevered out over the sea. What followed was one of the best meals of my life. La Dolce Vita!!
